-When I was a kid, my mother would always take a bunch of our (developed film) pictures and plaster them throughout a physical photo album so we could look through it. Today, the Facebook "photo album" has largely supplanted that custom.
I thought of this today when my grandmother asked me if my mother had made any photo albums lately, and I told her "only on Facebook".As a professional wedding photographer, I can tell you that newly weds almost always order an album from me. These days the 'coffee table' style is popular and very easy to produce. I use Blurb for this who aren't top end but are good quality and reasonably priced. Their software is downloadable , easy to customise and upload.
In my opinion there's nothing like looking through an album - Facebook and Flickr and the like just don't cut it for me although they serve a purpose for sharing with friends and family.

The thing is, when we are gone, how will our children know our story? By our photos and journalling in our family albums.
I do this. I print the best photos, and put them in scrapbook albums and journal my thoughts next to the photos. For example, instead of writing "Easter, 2010," I write, "John, look how handsome you look in your Easter suit, 2010." So I write it in my own handwriting and it is a book of love and a book of my child's history, that will one day be read by his children. Love passed down. I believe that is the purpose of these albums, along with the family history.
Good question! I wish more people were asking the same questions!
You can learn here how to do it. Good luck!

Hardly, there are a number of companies that do a great job and people still want an album of their wedding pics and are willing to spend a lot to get a quality one.
I usually do a 'yearbook' of my best images, it's revealing to compare what I used to think was good with what I can do now. I usually print them myself.

Yes, the physical "photo album" is obsolete.
